Mural Arts Launches First-Ever Revolving Art Gallery in Callowhill - Curbed Philly

Kid Hazo’s Caught Out There is part of the revolving art gallery at 1027 Ridge Avenue. It was designed and implemented with help from the Mural Arts Art Education program.

It’s not often that the words “artist” and “developer” are used in the same sentence. Yet a new arts initiative planned for the Callowhill neighborhood is the byproduct of that dynamic duo.

Union Transfer Mayer Hawthorne Tickets Union Transfer Philadelphia PA June 28th 2016

Mayer Hawthorne has over 100 million plays on YouTube, Spotify and all those other Internet sites. His sophomore album How Do You Do earned him a Grammy nod. And if he got a vote for every SoundCloud follower he has (five million), he could get elected Senator somewhere. But he’s not some piece of shit politician; he’s a musician who writes songs from the soul.

Here’s some stuff you can’t find on Wikipedia: Mayer Hawthorne starts his day off with waffles and The Whispers or turkey sausage and Steely Dan. Sometimes it’s punk rock and pancakes for dinner. It doesn’t matter as long as it’s breakfast food and music.

Raised by hippie parents in Ann Arbor, Michigan, smack between the Hash Bash and the car factories – Hawthorne’s old man taught him to play bass guitar at age five. He would play records in the house all while Mayer was growing up. He put him up on game. He’d say, “You hear him singing there? That’s David Ruffin.” Or, “You hear that guitar solo? That’s Stephen Stills.” And young Hawthorne would sit there, with his bowl of cereal, soaking it up.

Mayer DJed in Michigan at the height of Detroit hip-hop. He was there. Before Em blew, when Dilla was still alive. He was spinning records and making rap beats. Now he’s making soul records and rappers are sampling him. Circle of life.

Mayer’s been digging in the crates and you can hear the influences in his music. A touch of Shuggie Otis here, some Bob Marley there, a sprinkle of Sly Stone…

On his fourth full-length album, due out this spring, Hawthorne is back to handling the lion’s share of production. He also played damn near every instrument on the album and penned every track. His songwriting pulls from his life and observations; his heartache and joy. Sometimes it’s groovy, other times he’s vulnerable and sincere.

It’s the shit people listen to when they wanna get drunk and stoned and sentimental. The reason? Mayer Hawthorne stays making that timeless, soulful, baby-making music.

990 Spring Garden

The building at 990 Spring Garden St. was built almost ninety years ago, initially functioning as a warehouse for the Philadelphia Wholesale Drug Company. In its last incarnation, the interior of the building was chopped up into a collection of small office spaces, though the outside maintained a certain gravitas that we’ve always appreciated.

8static Presents Cheap Dinosaurs, You Bred Raptors, explosion sound, The X-Hunters at Vox Populi

You Bred Raptors? from New York City and [explosion sound] from Baltimore are making a stop in Philly for their first ever tour together! Come join us and our good friends The X-Hunters and Cheap Dinosaurs for a night of instrumental rock music.

You Bred Raptors? songs are crafted with 8-string bass, cello, drums and two glockenspiels. The compositions have a heavy, post-rock, experimental, film score-like sound.

[explosion sound] (pronounced PWOOOKAKAKOW) is an instrumental progressive rock group that varies in style from heavy metal to pop rock with a distinct video game music influence and occasional chiptune accompaniment that makes your brain go BOOM.

Cheap Dinosaurs is a psychedelic prog rock band. Based out of Philadelphia and led by ex-Chromelodeon leader Dino Lionetti, Cheap Dinosaurs’ audio-visual experience combines pop melodies with jagged rusty rhythms, circuit bent sounds and dirty synthesizer leads.

The X-Hunters are a four-piece instrumental video game metal band from the South Jersey/Philadelphia area. Influenced heavily by the Mega Man X series, the band is known for their blazing guitar work, syncopated rhythms, and thunderous drums.

!!!!!!!!!!

Corbu

¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
http://corbucorbu.com/

Corbu is a lucid dream you never want to wake up from. A memory of faded colors. Warm light behind a neon sculpture. The green hue of the sky before an afternoon storm. A game of hide and seek. The thoughts you have that don’t make sense, moments before you fall asleep. All of these seemingly mundane yet beautifully ordinary everyday experiences exist inside the universe that is Corbu and their debut LP, ‘Crayon Soul,’ due for release in spring 2016.

At times hazy and psychedelic, and at others glittering and electronic, ‘Crayon Soul’ was mixed by Dave Fridmann (Neon Indian, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala) and is littered with rising choruses that wash in and out over building bass lines like moving tides. The LP is the staggering follow up from two earlier EPs, ‘We Are Sound’ (2014), and ‘Everything You Imagine Is Real’ (2015) which drew attention from BBC Radio One’s Zane Lowe, garnered a remix request from Jesse Ware, and hype from the likes of NYLON, Stereogum, The Guardian, NME and more.

Fronted by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Graves, accompanied by his creative partner Amanda, drummer Todd Hoellerman, and a rotating cast of musicians for a live experience, Corbu began when Jonathan started having lucid dreams at age 12. That, and when he heard ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ from the backseat of his parents’ car. Together, Jonathan and Amanda create an all-encompassing synesthetic experience — music to transport you somewhere else.

Crayon Soul is just that- a wild, internal journey through the darkest reaches of space and the vivid colors of a futuristic rebirth. “It’s a journey through a series of ‘gates,’ or events that you pass through with the narrator,” muses Graves of the album. “At each event, you change and shift into a new part of the story.”

With each track on the record, the listener is one step closer to the narrator. Starting off with the transient and instrumental sounds of “Sirens” and easing into the funky bass lines of “Polygon Forest” and “Neon Hallway,” Corbu guides us through a spiral galaxy of disjointed pop songs. As the album progresses into tracks like “Better Better Off” and “Battles,” there’s a more guitar driven aesthetic to the sound of ‘Crayon Soul,’ and eventually we catch up to the narrator with the perfectly placed blissful sounds of ‘We Are Sound.’ It’s like you’ve arrived home after your journey, before the epilogue of “Dark Wave” — an acoustic, hand-clapped-laden track with an impossibly infectious riff.

“There’s something in there about the ability to see the ‘colors and lines between the dots’ — the unseen connections between things,” explains Jonathan. “Everyone has it when they’re little. We have a tendency to become more closed off and lose that ability over time… like a superpower that wears off. I found myself writing about the struggle to remain vulnerable, to keep that way of seeing things.” ‘Crayon Soul’ is an eye-opening trip — the band has even put together an extensive coloring book for listeners to experience while they listen, and create the artwork for themselves.

A collection of fragmented pop songs, coated in a layer of audio aesthetics that crackle and glow like the movie “Tron” in 1982, ‘Crayon Soul’ is a dream that Corbu are helping you piece back together, bit by bit.

Good Things Come in Twos

For Night Market #2, we’re heading to Callowhill for the second year in a row to flood not one but two streets with dozens of street food vendors, live music, arts and entertainment, and much more!

By our calculations, that’s twice as nice.

If you missed it the first time around, it’s not too late to get to know Callowhill, a historically industrial enclave just north of Chinatown where large brick and stone buildings create a dramatically different departure from Philly’s rowhome-ruled neighborhoods.

If you want to peep this neighborhood’s future, just look up: The old Reading Viaduct watching over Callowhill is slated to become Philly’s first above-ground urban park.
