A Town Called Panic: Double Fun (Philly Premiere)

A TOWN CALLED PANIC: DOUBLE FUN featuring CHRISTMAS PANIC and BACK TO SCHOOL PANIC!

Family-friendly matinee screenings: 2:00 + 4:00 PM

$10 admission

Two brilliant, zany, hilarious new films from the directors of cult classic A Town Called Panic and the Oscar-nominated Ernest & Celestine.

A TOWN CALLED PANIC: DOUBLE FUN revels in the surreal and freewheeling adventures of Cowboy, Indian, and Horse with two award-winning new specials in one theatrical program. In CHRISTMAS PANIC, after their out-of-control antics land them on the naughty list, our heroes travel to Santa’s warehouse in the North Pole to try to save Christmas. In BACK TO SCHOOL PANIC, Cowboy and Indian use a special shrinking potion to sneak into Pig’s brain to find the answer to their class assignment.

These two irresistible new shorts explode with over-the-top visual inventiveness and a slapstick comic sensibility that is perfect for adults and kids of all ages.

walter tv

In Montreal, McGarry and McMurray moved into an apartment with Mac DeMarco and a rotating cast of friends. It was there, in their small apartment, that they recorded their cult breakthrough album, Appetite. The creative process of Walter TV is free form and organic, with each member’s input equally valuable as the others. The result of this artistic autonomy is a unique sound built upon frenetic percussion, warbling vocals, abstract guitar, and a resonant bass line.

2Wet Crew

2Wet Crew is a loose group of comedians from LA. On the roster we got: Mikey Kampmann (actor, poet, Kokopelli), and Jay Weingarten (Facebook hot boy and contemporary observant comedian). They make lo-fi, absurdist comedy in a mixed media landscape. Note: 2 Wet Crew member DJ Douggpound is unable to attend this performance.

Cole Kush is a filmmaker and animator based in Edmonton, Canada. His works tend towards absurd, unsettling comedy, often finding the bizarre in the mundane.

FLASHER

Flasher is a trio from Washington, DC consisting of childhood friends Emma Baker (drums),Taylor Mulitz (guitar+vocals), and Daniel Saperstein (bass+vocals). After nearly a decade of cutting their teeth on a handful of different projects in the DC DIY scene, Flasher formed in late 2015. They released their debut 7 song self-titled EP on Sister Polygon Records in April 2016.

Swim Team

Cincinnati thrash-pop band Swim Team’s debut tape contains your 12 new favorite songs. It starts with “Dirty Work,” a grunge firecraker with unstoppable vocals, unapologetic lyrics, fuzzed-out guitar riffs, and a mid-song monologue that grows from a borderline deranged mumble to a ferocious catharsis. From then on, the album never stops. Feedback gives way to crunchy, headbang-inducing guitar and the drums and bass turn already-catchy tunes into straight up earworms with their relentless grooves. Singer Lillian Currens’ vocals jump from a caustic monotone to effortlessly cool croons to raw no-bullshit yelps, often seemlessly in the same track. Swim Team sounds like they could break free from your speakers at any moment, knocking you off your feet and leaving you scrambling for more.

In less than 30 minutes, the album blasts through every emotion you’ve ever buried deep inside yourself. (Hell, “Chlorine Dream”‘s warped promises of love only take 23 seconds to hook you in.) “I’m Fine” and “TV” perfectly capture the growing itch of little frustrations and people you can’t stand anymore, while “Reanimator” comes to terms with falling for someone who can’t seem to muster any normal human emotion. (“I’m in love with the living dead,” yells Currens in the chorus.) Swim Team’s quieter moments, like acoustic “Everything Went Wrong” and organ-filled “Closest Thing,” lament a love that could have been. By the time you get to “Teenage Mind” — an intimate reflection on the pains of growing up, with lines like “And I’m sorry that we grew up, I’m old enough now, I’ve seen enough world to know” floating over soft guitar — all you’ll want to do is hit repeat.

Empath

Closing Event & Tour: 9th Street Stock Exchange

Join us for a closing event and final tour of the 9th Street Stock Exchange!

For nine weeks, the historic 9th Street Italian Market has turned into a participatory public art project. Led by artist Jon Rubin, the 9th Street Stock Exchange sets up an alternate economic system between recent immigrant and established businesses that operate in close proximity to each other but are often separated by cultural and socioeconomic differences.

Free event, please RSVP in ticket link

——-

More about the project:

Rotating weekly, the participating stores displayed and selling selected products from each other’s businesses, facilitating new social connections by experimentally incorporating an aspect of each other’s identity into their own. A circle of trust is constructed through the project as each participant business becomes familiar and invested in a small way in the commercial welfare of the other participants. Products that in one business are culturally specific and expected by a regular customer base become strangely incongruous and newly present through this weekly act of dislocation.

Audiences can gain a deeper understanding of the project and the participating businesses (all located on South 9th Street between Christian & Federal) by taking a guided tour.

Bailo (Gennaro Bailo) was born August 7, 1991 in Brooklyn, but raised in Queens, NY. He spent much valued time with his grandfather, an Italian singer, who greatly influences Bailo and his mind-blowing tracks still today.

Music has always been in his blood. At the young age of 7, Bailo began singing and utilizing his natural talents. He auditioned for shows, including American Idol, X Factor, and The Voice. As he grew personally and artistically, his interest in singing shifted toward producing. Bailo went from banging on tables in high school with his friends, to making numerous mixtapes for upcoming artists. He’s also made his own mixtape, titled “No Sleep.” The turning point for Bailo occurred at the age of 21 when he was introduced to the EDM genre, specifically trap. It immediately “clicked” for him, and he hasn’t stopped ferociously chasing the dream; recently releasing “Clique,” under Borgore’s label, Buygore.

GivingTuesday Splash Paint for Peace

1100 Block of Pearl Street

#GivingTuesday Splash Paint for Peace

Tuesday, November 29, 4 p.m.

Creating community through the power of art has never felt more pressing than it does today during what feels like a stressful transition in our country. This is why Asian Arts Initiative is teaming up with local painter Jaiya Bhandari [www.jaiyabhandari.com] this #GivingTuesday to once more to brighten up Pearl Street with splash painting inspired by the festival of Holi. Join us under the Pearl Street Viaduct for a moment of reflection, togetherness, and creativity.

We’ll also be accepting #GivingTuesday donations at the event as well. With your help we can continue our important work and show the power of art as a catalyst for social change. At the end of the paint session, one canvas will be donated to Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission and one will be auctioned off, with proceeds being donated to Asian Arts Initiative to help continue its artistic partnership with Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission.

To be followed by hot cocoa and conversation in Asian Arts Initiative’s main gallery, currently exhibiting I Bear Witness, a reflection on history and its relevance to our current times.

Your clothes will leave more colorful than they arrive, so dress accordingly! The painting goes by quickly, so make sure you arrive early!

Make your #GivingTuesday donation now!: https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/1387834
