The Esoteric Symbolism of Twin Peaks - Zora Burden: Writer, Artist, Poet

David Lynch’s Twin Peaks is a multidimensional, metaphysical, neo-noir drama. It’s a surrealist masterpiece, interwoven with darkly comedic moments of absurdity, juxtaposed against the deceptively serene sentimentality of mid-century Americana and infused with esoteric symbolism.  Twin Peaks was a serial drama created by Mark Frost and David Lynch which aired for two seasons during 1990 to 1991. This award winning series resulted in a cult following and film prequel titled Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992).  David Lynch and Mark Frost not only infused an exhaustive amount of arcane knowledge into the script but also obscure news stories and classic film references.  The series is so informed esoterically, it is considered an initiatory process for mystery schools, of which Agent Cooper becomes an unknowing participant.  The show’s protagonist is FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, who travels to Twin Peaks in the rural Pacific Northwest on special assignment when Laura Palmer is found murdered, similar to a previous murder in Washington. The show presents highly complex worlds within worlds, which overlap and collide, containing dichotomies both obvious and subtle, within a constant flux of dualistic themes. Twin Peaks esoteric symbolism is derived from many sources but with a predominant message- the unification of dualities within and finding balance in nature. Creating this non-duality can be achieved through Taoism and spiritual alchemy. In Taoism and alchemy, our bodies are a microcosm of the cosmos, which contain the Ultimate Truth or Oneness. This truth exists in its purest form within the elements and nature, which alchemists applied to discover perfection within. The necessary process of integration and merging of dualities is personified within Agent Cooper and his investigation throughout the series. Agent Cooper’s shaman-like journey to discover Laura Palmer’s killer and the Lodges, initiates his own dark night of the soul, a ritualistic test on the threshold, a psychic and spiritual battle that culminates at the end within the Black Lodge. (Gyamtso, 2003)

Russ – The Wake Up Tour at Union Transfer

UT Newsletter: http://ticketf.ly/1RqX4bJ

Facebook Event Feed: http://on.fb.me/1Xjri0B

Russ

“I’ve been at this shit nine years and now they start to call,” Russ sings on his breakout single, “What They Want.” Don’t confuse this as idle boasting from the eclectic Atlanta phenom; it’s a reminder that his rapid ascent was anything but accidental.

As the truism goes, there are 10 years of hard work behind every overnight success. In an industry filled with plants and manufactured hype, Russ did it all himself. No deep-pocketed managers funded his ascent. No co-signs propelled his rise.

Since 14, the Atlanta native has dedicated himself to music with a passion you usually only see in Tour De France champions and fictional whaling captains. His music boasts the diverse tastes of someone who grew up everywhere: New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Kentucky and Ohio, and eventually Georgia.

You can detect those regional influences in his hooks of the artists he grew up with—a rich gumbo that resembles 50 Cent passing blunts with Jim Morison; The Allman Brothers jamming with Drake; The Beatles with George Martin swapped for Outkast; the middle ground between 2Pac and Dipak (Chopra).

Early in his teenaged years, his family eventually settled 20 miles outside of Atlanta. Around that same time, he began making beats. Towards the end of high school, he picked up a mic, and taught himself how to play the piano, guitar, and drums. After dropping out of Kennesaw State as a freshman, Russ formed his DIEMON Crew. They shot their own videos, made their own merchandise, and mostly recorded in isolation. At the age of 23, he’s emerged as a DIY pioneer.

When most of his peers mimic the most popular disposable art, Russ has created an uncategorizable style—one almost as brilliantly alien as history’s finest ATLiens. No exact analogues exist. Russ doesn’t slip back and forth from hyper-melodic inspirational guitar anthems to raw East Coast hip-hop—they’re all effortlessly combined in the same song. There are hints of hammock-rocking reggae, whiskey-soaked Southern rock, and soul-scarred R&B. No gimmicks, just eclectic fusion at its most advanced.

Russ made all the beats. He wrote all the raps and the hooks. He engineered and mixed and sang the songs, played the guitar, programmed the drums, and delved deep into his soul to figure out who he is and what he wants out of life. Then he wrote manifestos like “Do It Myself” to outline the road map for others to follow.

If the true mark of a rebel is to resist accepted falsehoods, speak up for what they believe, and go against the grain, Russ owns that description. Take his current hit, “What They Want.” Sure, the beat is hard and there are bars about girls and his rise to success, but it goes much deeper. He’s the one pulling the strings and pointing out the puppets. He’s savvy and attuned to the demands of the music industry.

This is a business and he’s aware that a sought-after commodity but refuses to fall into the clichéd pitfalls. Russ waited to sign to a major label until he had the leverage to fulfill his vision. No one can ever be the boss of him. He’s desirous of money but wary of it—nothing can compromise his integrity.

Consider “Pull the Trigger,” a song that questions accepted wisdom, rejecting fear, inspiring those on the fence to jump over it and get what they believe they deserve. The drums slap, the piano lines are menacing, the hooks as sticky as Southern humidity. Or “Losin Control,” a forlorn rap ballad as elegantly constructed and artfully sung as anything to ever come out on OVO.

This is heartfelt, truthful music for self-empowerment. Real soul. It’s hard but melodic, sophisticated but with a direct emotional message. There is a quote from the Alchemist, “and, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” Russ internalized that message, actualized it, and now, this story’s really about to begin.

Lady Parts – Tickets – PhilaMOCA – Philadelphia, PA – May 28th, 2017 | Ticketfly

Carroll / Adler Hall / Lizdelise / Lady Parts

Doors 7:00, Show 7:30, $10 admissionCarroll
http://carrollmusic.net/

Carroll’s first ever performance was just Brian Hurlow, alone, smashing his feet on a broken keyboard to trigger samples. Little did he know, ambient guitar sorcerer Max Kulicke and iconic drummer Charlie Rudoy were watching from afar. They joined and took the seeds of Brian’s sadness and grew them into jungles. It was only a matter of time until Charles McClung arrived and with a wave of his wand completed the Carroll lineup with tightrope bass lines and glass synths. After months of deep touring, the scattered parts of their first full length album were arranged neatly on the floor of their Minneapolis home, and they sent them to renowned engineer Jon Low (The National, The War on Drugs, Mr. Twin Sister). Jon was game and so the band shipped out to Philly to record their eponymous Carroll (Eone, 2015) in a headrush of 18 days. Carroll’s second record, also mixed by Low, tells a story of being adrift, of orbiting in and out of the lives of others. With heavy emphasis on synth syrup and dense, classic arrangements, Carroll’s 2016 follow up pulls the listener into a blissful, sometimes chaotic futuristic world.Adler Hall

Adler Hall is a Brooklyn-based, bedroom orchestra led by composer/songwriter John Henry Hoagland (Henry). In the winter of 2016, Henry formed Adler Hall in anticipation of a fall release through Odd Gift Records. Adler Hall’s debut full-length (Tourist) – produced by friend and fellow Odd Gifter Kyle Joseph – was released September 8, 2016.

Using field recordings from Japan and Brooklyn as a backdrop for its storytelling, (Tourist) explores the places – both near and far – where we struggle to reconcile what we look for with what we find.Lizdelise
http://lizdelise.com/

Lizdelise is a dreamy rock/pop duo from Philadelphia. Angular guitar lines meet looper and drum machine to create energized, intricate soundscapes — and a serious amount of noise for two people. After Liz released her first solo full length in September 2016, Liz and Mark joined forces, hopped in Liz’s 1994 GMC, and drove across the US and back. They’re now working on their first collaborative full length. (For fans of St. Vincent, Handsome Furs, Wye Oak.)

The Ultimate Esoteric Guide to Twin Peaks | Evolve + Ascend

If you’ve ever sensed the flimsy, thin veneer of what parades itself as the good ole US of A, and felt a bit like you’ve been sold a fake, then David Lynch’s Twin Peaks is a series you must see. More like an initiatory experience than a mere television series, Twin Peaks functions as a hilariously terrifying vision of the real America lurking in the seedy underworld beneath the façade of white picket fences, much like the picturesque severed ear on the beautiful lawn in his celebrated 1986 comedic horror, Blue Velvet. Twin Peaks might even properly be titled an esoteric dark satirical soap opera. There are countless reviews, essays and analyses of Lynch and Twin Peaks, but almost all miss the complex system of symbols and hidden meanings that relate directly to high level occultism.

Here"s That Raw Night Driving Song Introducing Mr. C, David Lynch"s Remix Of “American Woman” By Muddy Magnolias - welcometotwinpeaks

There’s hardly any music in the new Twin Peaks, and the lack of Angelo Badalamenti‘s jazz shuffle in certain scenes is disrupting, to say the least. Maybe that’s why many of us were blown out of our seats when, about 20 minutes into the premiere, this raw song kicks in to introduce someone we’ve last seen laughing maniacally and talking to himself in front of a mirror.

At the Divine Lorraine, the grand lobby’s return awaits - Curbed Philly

The historic Divine Lorraine’s full facade has been unveiled. | Photos by Melissa Romero

At the Divine Lorraine on North Broad, the two iconic lights atop the apartment building have been shining since November, and residents have been moving into their new homes in the historic building since January 1. Now, all that’s really left for the $44 million restoration project is the return of its grand lobby.

The Complete TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME – Tickets – PhilaMOCA – Philadelphia, PA – May 19th, 2017 | Ticketfly

UPDATE: 2nd screening added for Friday, May 20 at 7:30, tickets available now: http://www.ticketfly.com/event/1452194

To celebrate the upcoming resurrection of TWIN PEAKS, PhilaMOCA will host a screening of the complete 3.5 hour cut of TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME. It’s the original theatrical cut with all of the Missing Pieces footage integrated throughout according to the film’s original script. That means more Special Agent Chet Desmond (Chris Isaak), more Phillip Jeffries (David Bowie), appearances from just about every character from the original program that were removed from the theatrical cut (Big Ed, Truman, Pete, Andy, Lucy, Hawk, so many more!), and more footage of the Black Lodge that provides insight into the show’s mysteries and complements Mark Frost’s recent book. The result feels more like an extended episode of the original show and will surely please those who were left unsatisfied with the film’s original cut.

Lynch himself stated that the last seven days of Laura Palmer’s life are integral to the new season so now is your chance to catch up before the show debuts the following night.

“What makes Eraserhead great—and still, perhaps the best of all Lynch’s films? Intensity. Nightmare clarity. And perhaps also it’s the single-mindedness of its vision.” –Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

David Lynch’s surreal and seminal feature-length film debut portrays Philadelphia as a desolate black-and-white industrial landscape, devoid of warmth. The film is at once a beautiful look into the mind of protagonist Harry (Jack Nance), a lost dreamer, and a haunting portrayal of marriage and responsibility.

Andy Shauf - Tickets - Union Transfer - Philadelphia, PA, May 16, 2017 | Ticketfly

WKDU Philadelphia 91.7FM Presents

Andy Shauf / Julia Jacklin at Union TransferUT Newsletter: http://ticketf.ly/1RqX4bJ

Facebook Event Feed: http://on.fb.me/1Xjri0BAndy Shauf

Andy Shauf is a storyteller, a singer of heartbreak and regrets, isolation and loneliness, reflecting his prairie surroundings in Regina, Canada. Meticulously written over four years, Shauf’s The Bearer of Bad News is a warm and welcoming album, bathed in weathered piano, dampened drums, softly-strummed guitars and clarinet, which lends its unique timbre to frequently brighten – or hauntingly underscore – the songs’ darker undercurrents. Fans of Elliott Smith, Nick Drake and Harry Nilsson, take note.

Julia Jacklin

Julia Jacklin thought she’d be a social worker.

Growing up in the Blue Mountains to a family of teachers, Jacklin discovered an avenue to art at the age of 10, thanks to an unlikely source: Britney Spears.

Jacklin chanced upon a documentary about the pop star while on family holiday. “By the time Britney was 12 she’d achieved a lot,” says Jacklin.”I remember thinking, ‘Shit, what have I done with my life? I haven’t achieved anything.’ So I was like, ‘Mum, as soon as we get home from this holiday I need to go to singing lessons.’

Classical singing lessons were the only kind in the area, but Jacklin took to it. Voice control was crucial, and Jacklin flourished. But the lack of expression had the teen seeking substance, and she wound up in a high school band, “wearing surf clothing and doing a lot of high jumps” singing Avril Lavigne and Evanescence covers. It wasn’t much but she was hooked.

Jacklin’s second epiphany came after high school. Travelling in South America she reconnected with high school friend and future foil Liz Hughes. The two returned home to the Blue Mountains and started a band, bonding over a love of indie-Appalachian folk trio Mountain Man and the songs Hughes was writing.

“I would just sing,” says Jacklin. “But as I got my confidence I started playing guitar and writing songs. I wouldn’t be doing music now if it wasn’t for Liz or that band. I never knew it was something I could do. “

Inspired, Jacklin began educating herself. From Fiona Apple she learned to be bold with words; from Anna Calvi, the cut and presence of electric guitar; and from Angel Olsen, that interpretation triumphs over technique. Now living in a garage in Glebe and working a day job on a factory production line making essential oils, the 25-year old found time to hone her craft – to examine her turns of phrase, to observe the stretching of her friendship circles, to wonder who she was and who she might become. That document is Jacklin’s masterful debut album, Don’t Let The Kids Win – an intimate examination of a life still being lived.

Recorded at New Zealand’s Sitting Room studios with Ben Edwards (Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid), Don’t Let The Kids Win courses with the aching current of alt-country and indie-folk, augmented by Jacklin’s undeniable calling cards: her rich, distinctive voice, and her playful, observational wit.

You can hear it in opener ‘Pool Party’, a gorgeous lilt bristling with Jacklin’s tale of substance abuse by the pool; in the sparse, ‘Elizabeth’, wrestling with both devotion and admonishment of a friend; in detailing the slow-motion banality of a relationship breakdown in the woozy ‘L.A Dreams’; and in her resolve to accept the passing of time on the snappy fuzz of ‘Coming Of Age’. The album hums with peripheral insights, minute in their moments but together proving an urge to stay curious.

“I thought it was going to be a heartbreak record,” says Jacklin of Don’t Let The Kids Win. “But in hindsight I see it’s about hitting 24 and thinking, ‘What the fuck am I doing?’ I was feeling very nostalgic for my youth. When I was growing up I was so ambitious: I’m going to be this amazing social worker, save the world, a great musician, fit, an amazing writer. Then you get to mid-20s and you realise you have to focus on one thing. Even if it doesn’t pay-off, or you feel embarrassed at family occasions because you’re the poor musician still, that’s the decision I made.”

In person Jacklin is funny, wry, quick to crack a joke. It makes the blunt honesty and prickly insight laced through her songwriting disarming, a dissonance she delights in. “Especially coming from my family,” says Jacklin. “They don’t talk about feelings at all. I love writing songs about them and watching them listen and squirm. To me that’s great. I enjoy it.”

The title track was the last song Jacklin wrote for the album. “My sister’s getting married soon,” she says of the closer. “And it hit me – we used to be two young girls and now that part of our lives is over. Seeing her talking about wanting to have a baby and…it’s like, man I can’t believe we’re already here.”

Don’t mistake this awareness for nostalgia. “It’s not that I want to go back to that time at all,” says Jacklin. “It’s trying to figure out how to be responsible when you don’t identify with who you were anymore.”

“All my friends at this age are freaking out. Everyone’s constantly talking about being old. “Don’t Let The Kids Win” is saying yeah we’re getting older but it’s not so special. It’s not unique. Everyone has dealt with this and it’s going to keep feeling weird. So I’m freaking out about it too but that song is trying to convince myself: let’s live now and just be old when we’re old.”
