It’s time: Emily Haines is back with Choir of the Mind, the Metric singer’s first release as her Soft Skeleton solo project in a decade.
That interval has particular resonance for Haines: Choir of the Mind, due September 15 on Last Gang Records, comes 10 years after her Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton EP What Is Free to a Good Home?, which in turn stemmed from her 2006 LP Knives Don’t Have Your Back. Ten years before that, she released Cut in Half and Also Double under her own name.“It’s funny, I believe in a way that my life has functioned in decades,” Haines says. “A lot of things aligned to make this seem like the time.” Her solo projects represent transitions in her life: her 1996 album came as she passed over the threshold of adulthood, while Knives Don’t Have Your Back emerged after the death of her father, the acclaimed poet Paul Haines. “On Knives, there were strings and horns, the mood was funereal, there were all these other players. On Choir of the Mind, there is still a fair bit of instrumentation, but I found myself filled with a desire to achieve as much as possible using little more than the contents of my mind and my voice, anchored by my hands on the piano, propelled by these rhythms I was making with my breathing, like a panic attack on the bottom with a lullaby on top.”
Haines’ vocals are definitely the focal point of Choir of the Mind. She used her voice to create spellbinding orchestrations for an effect that is subtle and ghostly on “Wounded,” lush on “Fatal Gift” and deeply powerful on “Legend of the Wild Horse,” which she calls her “soft anthem.” Haines’ voice is the only audible instrument on “Strangle All Romance,” and she creates mesmerizing layers that drift and swirl through the title track, which includes a spoken-word part adapted from a poem by the Indian mystic Sri Aurobindo.
Haines recorded Choir of the Mind over several weeks in September and October of 2016, more or less alone in Metric’s Toronto studio with a borrowed 18-foot grand piano built in 1850. Her longtime musical partner/Metric bandmate, James Shaw, helped flesh out the sonics with various instruments and rhythmic elements. (Shaw also mixed the album). Sparklehorse drummer Scott Minor, a member of the Soft Skeleton’s first incarnation, returned to perform on “Legend of the Wild Horse.” Haines says, “The writing and recording process was heightened and intensive, the two became one thing.”
In between solo releases, of course, Haines keeps plenty busy with Metric. Formed in 1998, the band has released six full-length albums and three EPs on its way to commanding arena-sized stages, and contributing to soundtracks for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Cosmopolis.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Cynthia Dewi Oka is a poet, immigrant, and the author of Nomad of Salt and Hard Water (Thread Makes Blanket, 2016) and Salvage (Northwestern University Press, 2017). A two-time Pushcart Prize Nominee, she has received the Fifth Wednesday Journal Editor’s Prize in Poetry and grants from VONA, the Vermont Studio Center, and the Leeway Foundation. She is the creator of Sanctuary: A Migrant Poetry Workshop and has served as a poetry mentor for the The Blueshift Journal’s Speakeasy Project. Her poetry appears widely online and in print, including in American Poetry Review, Kenyon Review, Guernica, Black Renaissance Noire, Painted Bride Quarterly, and elsewhere. She is a contributor to the anthologies Best of Kweli: An Aster(ix) Anthology, Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Frontlines, Read Women, and Dismantle: a VONA Anthology. www.twitter.com/DowntownBoys Emma Goldman, the pioneering feminist and anarchist activist, is the widely attributed author of the saying “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be in your revolution.” While there is some question of Goldman’s actually saying it, if she did, she would almost certainly get along well with Downtown Boys, a six-piece multiracial, gender-integrated, bilingual rock band from Providence, Rhode Island that plays fierce but joyous punk rock with blazing energy, howling saxophones, and breakneck rhythms guaranteed to start a pogo frenzy on the dancefloor. Downtown Boys were formed by vocalist Victoria Ruiz and guitarist Joey De Francesco, who met when they were both working at a luxury hotel in Providence — she as a customer service representative, he in the room service department. In his spare time, De Francesco was also a labor organizer, helping the mostly Dominican employees at the hotel get better working conditions and more equitable pay. Joey also played with an activist marching band, the What Cheer? Brigade, and when he quit his job at the hotel in protest, he brought the band along with him, and the video of their small but enthusiastic demonstration eventually racked up over 4,800,000 views online.
Full Communism Eager to make music dedicated to social and political change, De Francesco and Ruiz formed the band Downtown Boys with fellow artists and activists Will Cioffi (alto sax), Emmett Fitzgerald (tenor sax), Norlan Olivo (drums), and Dan Schleifer (bass). Downtown Boys released a self-titled ten-song EP in June 2012, and Sister Polygon Records helped the group put out a four-song vinyl 7″ in February 2014. The established New York punk label Don Giovanni Records struck a deal with Downtown Boys, and their first full-length album, Full Communism, was released in May 2015; the album marked the recording debut of new alto sax player Adrienne Berry, replacing Will Cioffi. During their downtime from Downtown Boys, Ruiz and De Francesco are also members of Malportado Kids, who play a unique fusion of leftist punk and cumbia. Downtown Boys later reconvened for their third full-length record, and first for the long-running indie label Sub Pop. Ever socially and politically engaged, they released two lead singles prior to the album’s release, “Somos Chulas (No Somos Pendejas)” and “A Wall.” Cost of Living was produced by Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto, and debuted a leaner edition of the group. Sax players Fitzgerald and Berry were out of the band, replaced by Joe DeGeorge on sax and keyboards, while Mary Regalado took over on bass from Dan Schleifer. Cost of Living came out in August 2017.

Explore the neighborhood that so electrified Lynch’s imagination in the company of two tour guides: Hidden City’s Peter Woodall and Lynch aficionado Bob Bruhin. During this one-and-a-half hour walking tour, we’ll delve into the neighborhood’s pre- and post-Lynch history, as well as the sights and sounds that inspired Lynch’s movies, particularly Eraserhead.
