Who is she? Tour: Chartruisa and Jennifer Vanilla + Yixuan Pan

Vox Populi and Practice Gallery present

Who is she? Tour: Chartruisa and Jennifer Vanilla + Yixuan Pan

Starts: 7pm

Ends: 9pm

$7-10 suggested donation. no one turned away for lack of funds

Jennifer Vanilla is the entrepreneurial fantasy vessel LARPed into reality by Becca Kauffman, a New York City performance artist and long standing member of art rock band, Ava Luna. Her commercial-inspired vocalizations, paired with reconstructions (or “jv edits”) of 90’s house tracks, are reminiscent of Will Powers, Ann Steel, and Laurie Anderson, and provide the foundation for her comedic motivational, live performances. A contempo clown who uses attention as her business model, she’ll sell you back to yourself for free.

Monotone Monologues star Chartruisa, a local representative of Monochromania: the chartreuse sector. Drenched in a world of monochrome chartreuse and slow-speaking, androgynous monotone speed, Chartruisa is hypersensitive to touch but newly seeking love in the Earthly realm. Monotone Monologues recount small slurps of attempts of humanly connection.

Yixuan Pan is an artist who was born and raised in the land of fish and rice, Hunan, China. To deal with issues of translation and communication as well as reimagining the western hegemony through a global outlook, her anti-disciplinary practice merges multiple media and modes of presentation such as performance, video, lollipop, music therapy, choral conducting, and more. By dislocating language from its context and form, Pan questions the linguistic structures people learn and unlearn in relation to comfort, temperature, transparency, hierarchy and power dynamics.

Rhye / Boulevards at Union Transfer

UT Newsletter: http://ticketf.ly/1RqX4bJ

Event Feed: http://on.fb.me/1Xjri0B

Rhye

Rhye is the product of two synced paths crossing at the right time and place. The two artists who comprise Rhye had been fond of each other’s work for some time, and it was when one member was working on a remix for the other that they started to collaborate. They had begun talking about the remix at hand, which led them to the conclusion that maybe they should adapt that remix into a whole new song that could be done together.

They had never met in person, so one told the other to meet at a train station in Norreport, Copenhagen. Upon arrival, they immediately started working on the song together. They ended up with three songs they were proud of, which would ultimately end up on their full-length. It all just clicked. Both of their styles of making music completely complimented each other and working together flowed effortlessly.

Eventually, one of them moved to L.A. and the other happened to be coming out to shoot a music video. They met up with two friends from a record label and played them the songs they had made. From that point, the project took off growing into a full length album.

Boulevards

Jamil Rashad, a/k/a Boulevards, is the embodiment of funk. Taking queues from pioneers such as Prince, Rick James, and Earth Wind & Fire, Boulevards seamlessly delivers cheeky, party-themed jams that range from raw and risqué to soulful on his debut LP Groove!

From an early age, Jamil’s father, a R&B Radio DJ, exposed him to jazz, blues, and R&B. This pushed him to get involved in the city’s local music scene early on in his youth. In his teens, he embraced the punk and metal scene in his hometown of Raleigh, NC; genres that would later go on to influence Rashad’s songwriting by way of their tight technical precision and power. After an art school education and several stints in local bands, Jamil rediscovered and returned to his first true love: funk.

Boulevards evokes a spirit from a time that combined intricate production with a focus on rhythm and getting people back on the dance floor. With Groove!, Boulevards does just that. On tracks like “Patience,” Rashad melds pop with vintage hip-hop elements — think Eddie Murphy meets The Sugarhill Gang — and it just works. “Cold Call” introduces a slow hypnotic groove before a symphony of synths, creating a rhythmic cadence that stays with you even after the party is over. However, to give Groove! merit solely based on nostalgia would be a mistake. Groove! is not just a rework of a classic sound — it is an intelligent collection, an evolution to reign in a new era of funk – heard via the disco pulses on tracks like “Weekend Love” and “Up On Your Love,” nodding to industry giants like Pharrell and Breakbot.

Bringing back producers Roller Girl! and Taste Nasa, who helped craft his critically received self-titled EP. Groove! delivers catchy songwriting, infectious bass lines, and plenty of hooks to keep you grooving until dawn, a clear indicator that there is still room for funk in 2016 – and that room will be occupied by Boulevards.

I moved to #Callowhill knowing it was the dystopic hellscape that inspired #DavidLynch’s nightmares, and hoped to find a muse of my own. But the reality of what it’s become is a wasteland of ample parking and McMansions shoehorned into “artist lofts” no artist could ever dream to afford. Callowhill is puerile sensory deprivation, a place where suburban refugees drive to Target and the rest use “Uber” as a verb. The flip side of Lynch’s #ManInThePlanet – a beautifully scarred face staring out a cracked window to the haunting tune of #InHeaven – today’s Callowhill, callously re-dubbed #SpringArts by developers from somewhere else, is just another tired trope of gentrification. Brunch. Craft beer. Parking lots. Bland, boring, banal…expected. #wheredidalltheweirdosgo

February 22 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm UTC-5

PAFA The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts118-128 North Broad St
Philadelphia, PA 19102 United States

Emily Erb contemplates American values and ideals in ‘American Love Story.’ Her silk paintings are created using an Eastern technique she learned in Madagascar in 2005. By combining this ancient silk painting tradition with imagery often collected from American paper currency, Erb investigates the tension between authoritative Western ideals and America’s ethnic and racial diversity. She argues, “There is no ‘American culture’ per se, it’s not hamburgers. The beauty of America is immigration.” American Love Story will be on view…

UNEARTHED & UNTOLD: THE PATH TO PET SEMATARY – Tickets – PhilaMOCA – Philadelphia, PA – February 21st, 2018 | Ticketfly

It’s true that sometimes dead is better, but for two New England filmmakers, the story of Stephen King’s PET SEMATARY was far too alluring to leave buried. That’s why John Campopiano and Justin White spent nearly five years seeking to uncover the story – from book, to film, to cult status – amounting to the most comprehensive look at the horror classic ever produced.

Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary is both an in-depth independent documentary and celebration of King’s classic tale of terror, told through the voices of cast and crew from the 1989 hit film, as well as locals in Maine – the place where it all started. In addition to first time ever interviews, tours of the many iconic locations used in the film and never-before-seen photographs and home video from the set, this film explores the impact PET SEMATARY has not only on horror fans, but scholars of Stephen King’s work. Featuring interviews with director Mary Lambert, stars Denise Crosby, Dale Midkiff, Miko Hughes, Brad Greenquist, Andrew Hubatsek, Susan Blommaert, the Berdahl twins, Michael Lombard and MANY MORE!
