The Story of Frank L. Rizzo Amateur Night at City Hall filmmaker in attendance

Thursday, July 28 at 7:30 PM

AMATEUR NIGHT AT CITY HALL:

THE STORY OF FRANK L. RIZZO (1978)

Filmmaker Robert Mugge in attendance!

This documentary on Philadelphia’s most polarizing mayor of modern times was filmed throughout 1977 and ran for two weeks at the Walnut Mall Cinemas during the blizzard of early 1978. Although the film was released before Rizzo’s controversial assault on radical group MOVE, it chronicles attacks he ordered on Black Panthers and on young people lounging in Rittenhouse Square, his failed polygraph test, and his routinely tough talk (“I’m gonna make Attila the Hun look like a faggot”). The film’s primary theme is “politics as show business,” and it includes many amateur musical performances from South Philadelphia’s Triangle Tavern. Among the many interviewees are broadcast journalists Andrea Mitchell and Larry Kane and stripper Blaze Starr who discusses her reputed affair with the self-proclaimed family man.

DNCinema presents EARLY WARNING 1981 free admission

Tuesday, July 26 at 7:30 PM

EARLY WARNING (1981)

It wouldn’t be a political film series without a conspiracy film! One of the classics of Christian conspiracy cinema, 1981’s EARLY WARNING concerns the One World Foundation, a Satanic international organization set on ruling the world through bar codes and the suppression of vital resources. A Christian journalist teams up with a non-believer newsman to uncover the truth and are pursued by the Foundation up to a laughably bleak ending that, if anything, illustrates the dangers of committing one’s life to the faith (the opposite of the filmmakers’ intentions, of course). This one is gonna be a ton of fun with a crowd.

Voice of the Eagle The Enigma of Robbie Basho Tickets PhilaMOCA Philadelphia PA July 24th 2016 Ticketfly

Philadelphia Premiere

VOICE OF THE EAGLE:

THE ENIGMA OF ROBBIE BASHO

Two screenings: 4:30 + 7:30 PM

$10 admission, doors open 30 minutes prior to screenings

Before his bizarre death at the hands of a chiropractor, Robbie Basho was sure that his compositions would not outlast him. Orphaned during infancy, diagnosed with synaesthesia (a union of the senses that caused him to interpret sound as colour) and claiming to be the reincarnation of a 17th century poet – the Baltimore-born guitarist and singer’s musical output was equally as outlandish as his persona.

In his brief and troubled life he laid the foundations for radical changes to the musical landscape of America during the 1960s and 70s but reaped little more than a sparse (if fervent) following during his lifetime.

Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho is a journey into the heart of an artist’s lifelong struggle – designed to illuminate and satiate existing fans while serving as a perfect starting point for the uninitiated.

Featuring interviews with Basho’s former students, contemporaries and few close friends (including Pete Townshend, William Ackerman, Henry Kaiser and Country Joe McDonald); the documentary integrates new information and anecdotes on Basho with previously uncovered archive material and photography of the natural phenomena and landscapes that informed his work.

With the resurgence of interest in Basho growing and a more widespread revival a tangible possibility, it is surely an auspicious time for his unique music and life story to be evoked through documentary.

philly.com - Where the heck is Spring Arts Developer commissions Mural Arts to rename a Philly neighborhood

[MICHAEL BRYANT / Philadelphia Inquirer] Ryan Beck paints a mural in Callowhill as part of an outdoor gallery project. Developer Craig Grossman, who sought and partially funded the project, seeks to rebrand a gentrifying stretch between Eighth and 12th, from Noble to Spring Garden Streets, as Spring Arts.

This developer-driven model diverges from the traditional, bottom-up Mural Arts process, which is open to any applicant with a wall and an idea. It’s also a novel approach to creating a sense of place, engineered by Grossman’s Arts & Crafts Holdings. The company entered the neighborhood just last year and bought about a dozen properties in the vicinity of the planned elevated rail park, reflecting an investment of more than $20 million.

With it, the developer brings a vision to recast the area – alternately known as Callowhill, Chinatown North, the Loft District, Trestletown, and even Eraserhood (a nod to filmmaker David Lynch) – as Spring Arts, a center for the creative class.

“I’m an art lover, personally and publicly. I know, obviously, the power that it has to ignite change,” Grossman said. He figured art could also attract a new constituency. Branding the area as Spring Arts, making it one big outdoor gallery, “provides it with an identity that area’s been lacking.”

Some longtime residents don’t see it that way.
